Independent Living

feeling freedom…

“I moved into the Sanford House Group Home in 2013.  I learned how to do more on my own and in 2018, I moved into the Duke Street Apartments.

Meet Gary!

I love where I live.  I like the privacy and independence of having my own place. I feel freedom and it is my own.  I am independent with just the help I need.  I like having privacy.  I go to work and come home to my own place.

I like the people that are around me.  I can always talk to the workers like Teresa. Pete is a really good person to talk things out with.  I get to do different things through the services I get like going to the Y, having help with paying bills and going to the grocery store. I enjoy school too (at the Community College).

I really appreciate what my staff has done for me.  I can call them with any problem I have. I have good relationships with my staff and my neighbors.  I really like my neighbors.  Some I have known a really long time and some are newer to the apartments.

I like to help the new ones.  I like to be a friend to others and help them. I like to help because sometime I may need help.

The staff are caring and that is what I like.  The staff tell me to let them know of anything I need. This lets me know that I will be Okay.  Ya know, there are some people that you can’t really trust but I do know that I can trust my staff.  They are willing to help in any way they can.”

Meet Bo!

Bo was one of the first residents in our Independent Living apartment program!  He has lived independently with support for twenty-nine years!

Bo enjoys driving to work at KFC on his scooter where he has been a valuable employee for almost twenty years!

Bo very much enjoys his guinea pig, Snoopy!  Bo has a heart of gold and a great friend to his neighbors!

bridging the gaps

IMPACT is able to bridge the gaps for those who have mastered many independent living skills and choose to live on their own.  Whether an individual resides in IMPACT’s apartment program or a home in the community, IMPACT is here for them.

IMPACT can help develop a plan to assist with the areas where further skill development or assistance is needed, such as bill paying, transportation and assistance at medical appointments and/or assistance with organizing and ensuring proper administration of medications.

As is true with all services offered by IMPACT, the plan of how to support is designed uniquely to meet the specific needs of each individual.

Meet Zack!

Independent Living at Duke Street Apartments

At Duke Street, residents typically thrive with just a few hours of daily support. Many work part-time, take classes, or volunteer.

Assistance may include medical appointments, medication prep, money management, healthy routines, or meal planning. Staff help bridge gaps between mastered and developing skills.

A vital part of independent living is spending time with loved ones. IMPACT is seeking a Volunteer Grant to build an outdoor shelter for cookouts, games, and connection.

This space will strengthen relationships and create lasting memories. IMPACT is truly grateful to partners who help make meaningful lives possible.

The following is an interview conducted by Executive Director Julie Wood with Zack, who is loving his job at Food Lion!

Hey, Zach, I understand you have a new job. Can you tell me a little bit about it?

Oh, yes. My name is Zach. I love my new job at Food Lion. I go around and I take care of business and make sure the store looks very clean and very precise and very organized and everything. Make sure the store looks very grand for customers to be able to come into and be able to have the very best shopping experience possible.

Boy, it sounds like you really take pride in your position. Were you nervous about starting a job?

No, not really. Not really. I was excited.

That is so awesome. Well, what does it mean to you to have a job? Like, how does it make you feel as a person?

Well, it makes me feel very great inside, very, very wonderful inside to be able to help customers out and be able to go around the store, you know what I'm saying, and be able to make sure that the store is very clean and prospective and very nice and well-meaning to take care of. So, you know, it makes a better customer experience and you go in ready to do a good job.

And at the end of the day, how do you feel?

I feel like I accomplished a lot and I feel like I made a very good impact towards people's shopping experience in life.

That is so wonderful. You know, little things make a big difference in life for us and the people who just enter a store. Well, I am so impressed and proud of you for your good job and the way you've entered the workforce and it takes such pride in it. Good job, Zach.
